It actually depends on the gravity of your violation. Typically, if your only violation is driving without car insurance, you will be assigned with 3 points in your license plus you will be asked to pay a fine. The court determines the amount you need to pay, so you should contact them in case this happens to you.

If you have a car insurance policy that is outdated, the court will most likely know about this, too. Car insurance companies are required to notify the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NC DOT) about the status of your policy. If the NC DOT learns that your policy has been cancelled or has lapsed, they will send you a letter of request for new insurance information. If you disregard this warning, the NC DOT will confiscate your vehicle’s license plate for 30 days. You can get your license plate back only if you provide them with information regarding your new car insurance policy.

If you get caught driving without car insurance and you were found at fault in an auto accident, the court will most likely give you more serious penalties. Aside from paying a certain fine (which could be higher than usual), you may face the possibility of a driver’s license suspension or even vehicle impoundment.
